There are two Spanish words for a and an: un and una, used according to the gender of the world to which they are attached. Spanish also has more than one word for the: el is used with masculine words, and la with feminine words. So we have:
el apartamento el piso el arquitecto
la oficina la familia la señora la calle
Whe the precedes a plural words, two new forms are needed. El becames los and la becomes las. So we have:
Los apartamentos los pisos los arquitectos
las oficinas las familias las señoras las calles
When you are talking about a person by their name and title, you need to use the definite article(el, la, los or las), for example
El Sr. Méndez no entiende alemán.
= Mr. Méndez doesn´t understand German.
La Srta. Carrera es madrileña.
= Miss Carrera is from Madrid.
Los Sres. Alba son sevillanos.
= Mr. and Mrs. Alba are from Seville.
However, when talking to a person face to face, the definite article is not needed, unless you are asking the who they are.
Sr. Méndez, ¿Habla Vd. inglés?
Buenos días, Srta. Carrera.
¿Son Vds. los Sres. Alba?
