(Lake Wobegon Effect, The better than average effect)


자신이 평균보다 낫다고 생각하는 현상.


The above average effect or better-than-average effect is one kind of positive illusion.
일종의 긍적적 환영 같은 것이다.

It describes the tendency for people to evaluate themselves as 'better than average' on desirable skills, characteristics or behaviors.
각자가 자기가 원하는 영역이나 캐릭터, 행위에 대해서 평균 이상으로 가치를 매기는 것이다.

It is a characteristic bias of
 social comparison where people usually compare themselves to an unspecified peer and, despite the mathematical odds, en masse judge themselves to be better than their average peer.
일종의 사회적 비교우위로, 자신과 불특정의 대상과 비교하여, 그 불특정 대상의 평균 이상일 것이다라는 편견이다.

For instance, surveying drivers, the Swedish researcher Ola Svenson found that 88% of American college students rated themselves as above the median on driving skills.
