Redefining the GNP, Robert F. Kennedy. GNP에 대한 케네디 상원의원의 재해석.

암살당하기 얼마전, 미국의 Robert F. Kennedy는 GNP에 대해서 아래와 같이 말했다.

"Too much and too long, we seem to have surrendered community excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our gross national product ... if we should judge America by that - counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them. It counts the destruction of our redwoods and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.


"Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans."

그 내용을 간단히 정리해보면,
사회 수준을 말하는 GNP가 물질적인 삶의 수준을 측정하는 도구로, 담배광고, 교통사고 수습을 위한 투자, 범죄자들을 위한 교도소나 각종 방범 시설 그리고 도시 확장을 위한 각종 환경파괴등을 담고 있지만, 비물질적인 삶의 질의 형태, 교육의 질, 결혼의 행복과 시의 아름다움, 토론이 주는 사회적 지성 수준 등 담지 못한다고 말한다.
케네디 의원은 GNP가 미국인들의 삶의 모든것을 담지만, 미국인이 자랑스러워할 수 있을 사회적 가치를 담아내지 못한다며, 물질적 발전에만 매몰되어 있는 미국 사회를 우회적으로 비판했다.
그 또한 도덕적 가치와 명예를 중시하는 사람이였음을 조금이나마 느낄 수 있다.
